I am so excited to kick off this project with this incredible story. As most things I find these days, I found out about The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue on TikTok. After hearing the 30-second description, I was absolutely hooked and bought it the very same day. A positively binge-worthy book, I flew through it, unable to sleep until I had finished reading. Each page had me more and more intrigued, hanging on to every word for dear life. This story was everything literature should be - romantic yet heartbreaking, exciting yet simple, fantasy but real and relatable. The story resonated with me as a modern-day adaptation of my all-time favorite book The Master and Margarita (another great read for anyone who likes Addie’s story).
As I read, I instantly recognized that a French 75 was the only drink that could be paired with this incredible book. The story follows Addie LaRue - a young French woman trapped in an arranged marriage who makes a deal with a dark god to avoid it. She asks for a life of freedom and independence, and with that she is granted immortality - the catch, however, is that she is unable to leave any mark on the world. Anyone she meets will forget her the moment they lose sight of her, and so she has lived her life alone for centuries, traveling the world. One day, she stumbles upon a bookshop hidden away in the streets of NYC where she meets a boy who, astonishingly, remembers her… and her adventure to leave her mark on the world becomes even more exciting.
Without divulging too many of the details so as to not spoil anything - Addie discovered her love for champagne early on in the story. It was her favorite indulgence all throughout 300 years of existence, and remains so throughout all the pivotal points of the story. As a result, I knew a champagne-based drink was the way to go - and what better than a French 75?
Addie was born in Villon, a small village in France, in 1714 - and we join her on her journey through 2014. The French 75 is a drink that was named after the 75 millimeter field gun the French used in World War I, but was invented during the Prohibition. During the First World War, Addie spent her time in Paris - arguably the most difficult time of her life. She was also a muse for many artists throughout history, and did live through the Prohibition era as well, making the French 75 the perfect drink to sip while enjoying this riveting tale.
